I'm Healing

I am healing. I am using conventional medicine and alternative methodologies. I am super excited about how good I feel when I take my new vitamins! Here's some info on the  B vitamins that are helping me kick my afternoon coffee habit!
Boosting my immune system and adequate energy to keep up with my active life is so important to me. Another great great reason I am in love with my vitamins, is that they are are isontonic.

" For a substance to be absorbed by the body, it must be transported in an isotonic state. This means that there is less work for your body, and maximum absorption of B vitamins."

When Different Happens
March 4, 2013
By Vida P. Anthony Gomez

I am just returning from what I will lovingly call my Health and Wellness Sabbatical. I am recovering from pneumonia. It was definitely an unexpected event in my life. In addition to me being very ill, my husband was out of town! It was a time of different in my home. We experience different in our classrooms all the time!  Student illnesses, new students, staff absences, and unexpected fire drills are all things that contribute to a different day. I didn’t even mention flying bugs or drizzling rain!!!! There were definitely some tools I used in my home to help us get through this “time of different.”  We can also use these tools in our classrooms.
When “different” happens in our classrooms, we can utilize tools to help maintain routines for our students. We can help them feel safe and help them keep learning. WE CAN:
·         Maintain routines and schedules
·         Discuss Changes
·         Do Our Favorite Things
·         Give ourselves downtime, grace and love

Maintain Routines and Schedules
Children thrive on routine! This comes naturally to our young children and is a way to reduce anxiety for our students on the autism spectrum. Even if the schedule is different in some way, try to maintain all parts of the school day. Our young students may not understand that circle time occurs at 9:15, but they do understand that first we have breakfast, then we have circle. If something interrupts circle, like career day or a fire drill, try to have a mini-circle, so that the students still get to experience all the parts of their day. Let the students know that circle may be shorter or that some songs may not be sung. This helps children understand their day and help them deal with other changes in the day.
Discuss changes
There are a variety of ways to show students change will happen. We can tell them verbally. We can show them on the classroom schedule. We can use visuals to show our students on the schedule and calendar. Are you unsure how to teach changes in schedule? The Picture Exchange Communication System has a wonderfully effective way to teach schedule changes to all students. I would be happy to share this strategy. It helps reduce anxiety and teach our children how to be resilient in times of change.
Do Your Favorite Things
In times of change or “different”, it is comforting to do things we love. It helps the feel good chemistry of our brains combat the stress of different. During my Wellness Sabbatical, I lit candles, crocheted and read books. I love to do those things! What activities or books do your students love? My class loved dough, scissors and chenille stems. They loved newspaper and masking tape, in blocks. They loved the books Cookie’s Week, One Duck Stuck and Stephanie’s Pony Tail. They loved The Three Little Pigs by Greg and Steve. I always had our favorite things ready, so that if a time of different was upon us, I could take out books, songs, activities or other things the students loved. They could do these activities independently, with success and with joy. When we do our favorite things in time of change, it helps the stress chemistry of change decrease.
Give Yourself Downtime, Grace and Love
Sometimes things are different and don’t go as we plan. This is as good a lesson for us to learn as our students! Some days during my Health and Wellness Sabbatical, I was worried that my children were late to school. Instead, I could be thankful that my children had completed their homework, were clean and fed. Tardiness was ok for that day. Maybe we are not able to do the assessment we planned at centers, because a friend needed us to sit and read a book with them. That is ok. In that moment, our students are still learning. We are supporting all the parts of their development, when we can slow down and follow their lead and needs.

In times of different in our classrooms or our lives, we can use a variety of strategies to continue our student’s growth. We can maintain routines and schedules so that students are less anxious and understand what is happening during their day. When we discuss changes, we let students know what is happening and help them learn how to deal with change. We can do our favorite things to help decrease stress chemistry. Importantly, we need to give ourselves time, grace and love to help us get through times of “different.”
Wishing you a healthy and nourishing Spring Break!

Really?!

I can't believe it has been over a year since I have posted. I am going to get back to it! I want to share my learning and my experiences in nourishing. My word for this year is nourish. Instead of choosing several resolutions to feel guilty about not achieving, I have instead chosen to nourish. This year I will focus on nourishing our bodies, nourishing healing, nourishing my marriage, nourishing my children, nourishing relationships with others and most importantly nourishing my relationship with Him.

My Attempt at a Gluten-Free Dutch Baby

It worked....kinda. The boys loved the Dutch Baby and so did my dear husband. It did rise, a little, in the oven. It was a flat pancake when we ate it, but it was good. This was my first time ever making a Dutch Baby, GF or not. I looked at various recipes GF and not, and this is what I tried.

2 T butter(or coconut oil)
4 eggs room temperature
1/4 cup brown rice flour
1/8 cup white rice flour
1/8 cup tapioca starch
1 tsp xanthum gum
pinch of salt
1 tsp sugar
1/2 cup milk(I used cow, but will try another type next time)
1/8 tsp allspice and cinnamon

1. I placed a cast iron skillet in a 475 degree oven.
2. I beat the eggs until light and added milk. I whisked both. I mixed in the sugar.
3. I mixed the flours, salt and xanthum gum in a seperate bowl.
4. I poured the flour into the eggs and mixed them together.
5. I took the skillet out of the oven.
6. I coated the skillet with butter and poured in the batter.
7. I lowered the oven temp to 425 and put it in the oven until set and golden.

I think next time I will mix in the blender and see if it is fluffier. Maybe I'll try sorghum flour, too.

We ate with yogurt, honey and strawberries.

Saturday Mornings

One of my goals for beginning a blog was to share a real working mom's ways to include play and fun and routines into the everyday. I will be honest--I am a perfectionist. Sometimes the ideas of what should happen, interfere with me enjoying what is happening. Saturday mornings help me learn how to go with the flow.

So right now, like every Saturday morning, my children are watching cartoons(in Spanish). Hot coffee is waiting for my husband, who likes to sleep in. A new recipe is cooking in the oven and I am taking seven minutes to share.

If the recipe works, I'll share that too!

I am so thankful.

It is winter in Florida. For dinner we ate local tomatoes, strawberries, black bean soup and rice. In the fridge, we have local corn and some honey for pancakes. Yum.

GFCF Mommy: Getting Started

Recently I have had many families come to me with concerns for their children who are "always so sick" or have tummy troubles. GFCF Mommy was a blog I read everyday for a long time when I was in the beginning stages of my GF allergen free eating.

Morning Blessings

"Dear Lord, I open my heart to Your coming. Come close to me, Lord, and let me yield my whole being to You. Teach me to know myself and to fill my empty being with the radiant life of Your love, that I may become a fountain of blessing to quench my own thirsts and to offer love to meet the thirsts of my companions on this journey to You."

Peppermint Paint

Today was a hot, humid, about to rain kind of day. I did not want to spend the morning at the park. The beach would have been lovely, but the other things we had planned for the day did not allow for the beach to fit into our day. What would be fun, novel and include nice cool water? "Peppermint Painting!" I painted a lot in the Spring and Summer with my pre-school classes. My students loved to paint with easels, with their paper clipped onto the fence, or with soapy water and paint brushes. Today I added peppermint essential oil to soapy water and grabbed a paint roller. My youngest(3 years old)was ready to paint. I swept our walkway, while my youngest painted our wall and door. I was behind him with a towel, so that no one would slip on our walkway. My youngest was wet and cool. He was busy and full of smiles. The soap helped clean our door and the peppermint oil will hopefully keep away bugs. This activity helped foster his imaginative play and assist in the gross motor skills that will eventually lead to the fine motor skills needed for handwriting.

Happy Summer!

Another Fun, Fabulous and Free Day

I forgot to tell you about GWiz! We visited GWiz one Friday afternoon. It was a great way to escape the heat. The kids enjoyed the 3-D Art display, the health display, animals, and machines display. My youngest especially loved the new child's play area. I appreciated that the play area is inside and well padded. We are members of Mote Marine, and for the summer we have reciprical membership Happy Summer!

Rest Today

"Lord, our God, we are in the shadow of Your wings. Protect us and bear us up. You will care for us as if we were little children, even to our old age. When You are our strength we are strong, but when we are our own strength we are weak. Our good always lives in Your presence, and we suffer when we turn our faces away from You. We now return to You, O Lord, that we may never turn away again."

A Gift From Dorothy ValcĂ rcel, Author When A Woman Meets Jesus Dorothy@Transformationgarden.com

"Lord, help us to be patient
With our children,
To give them time
When they need it,
To listen to their views
However much they may differ from ours.
Help us in our conversations together
That we may always trust each other.
As our children search for knowledge
Help us to learn with them."
